Q – The merit rating of a coil. It is the inductive reactance divided by the resistance, or X L / R. The lower the Q, the more heat the coil will produce, thus wasting more power. 

Q Meter – A reactive power meter that looks at the ratio of VARs to Watts, or mathematically, VARs divided by Watts. (VARs / Watts) A reading of zero on a Q meter equates to unity power factor which is ideal; the larger the value, the worse the power factor.
